Configuring NL240 via USB

Coralie May 19, 2015 12:30 PM

Hello,

Before connecting for the first time a NL240 via USB to a computer, it is required to install the driver for the NL240 before.

I downloaded the latest version of Device config utility (2.10) and installed on my laptop but The installation of the driver fails.

My laptop iruns a windows XP OS and is a 32 bits version.

I did it on another computer running windows 7 (64bits) and it works.

Does anyone have an idea to make it work on a windows XP os?

Thanks,

Coralie

Hi-
I have tested the driver file on my windows xp 32 bit machine and it installs just fine. I do get the typical winxp warning about the software not passing the "windows logo testing to verify its compatibility" but when I press "Continue Anyway" the driver is installed.

I would first try downloading devconfig again and then re-installing it. If the problem persists, you can try manually adding the driver. I can help you with that if needed.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply!

I downloaded and installed again DevConfig and the problem persists.

A window "Cannot complete the device driver installation wizard" appears. There is a red cross in the driver name field and the status is install failed (unsigned).

Can you explain me how to add manually the driver?

Thanks for your help,

Coralie

The error message you give implies that you either do not have the correct administrative rights on your machine or more likely a group policy is set (which is sometimes set by default on Enterprise versions of Windows operating systems) which is preventing the installation of drivers which are not signed.

In some cases you can temporarily over-ride that security setting by changing the boot up settings prior to installing the drivers. Can I suggest you check with your IT department as to their driver installation policy and if they can overcome this for you.

You can tell your IT department that the drivers used for the NL240 are standard Microsoft USBSER.SYS drivers that are normally preinstalled on the PC. The installation process simply tells Windows to use those drivers when the NL240 is plugged in. Unfortunately this can be blocked if the drivers are not deemed to be signed and you are not given the option to ignore this.

FYI generally all of our driver installation files are now signed, but there is another problem you may have encountered and that is your copy of Windows may not be up to date with all the data about the current Digital Certification Authorities. That information is normally updated by the Windows Update process. Unfortunately that will not be working with XP because they stopped support and updates last year.

With early versions of some drivers, we had this troubleshooting information in the readme.txt:

Connecting the device to a PC via USB before the installation
of the driver causes a non-functional placeholder definition
to be created in the Microsoft Windows USB device list. This
placeholder prevents that device from becoming active during
subsequent driver installs and device connections via USB.

Ensure that the Driver has been installed from DevConfig.

Open the Device Manager (In Windows 7, this is done by choosing
Control Panel | Hardware and Sound, and then clicking on the
Device Manager icon found in the Devices and Printers section).

Find the placeholder device (NL240) identified
with a super-imposed exclamation point in a yellow bubble box.
Right-click on the device. Select "Scan for hardware changes"
or "Update Driver Software...".

Hello,

I did what you suggested in your last email. I found NL240 with an exclamation point and I selected "Scan for hardware changes" or "Update Driver Software" but not working still...
I did not plug the NL240 to my computer through USB before installing the driver.

Can you confirm the driver is developed to work on a 32-bits computer running a windows XP?
The computer I have is a panasonic Toughbook CF-19, with an Intel Core Duo CPU, U2400 at 1.06GHz with 2Go RAM running a Windows XP with service pack 3.

As I get the message "install failed (unsigned)" when trying to install the driver from DevConfig, I may deactivate something to make it run even if the driver is not signed? Do you know how to process?

Do you have a driver installation version that do not need to be run under DevConfig?

Thanks,

Coralie

As stated before the driver used is on already on the machine, it is part of Windows. From the error message you received the install is failing probably because Windows does not think the "NL240.INF" file (which controls the installation) is signed.

One thing you can check is this:

--
Right click on the "My Computer" icon (normally on the desktop) then select Properties to open System Properties.
In “System Properties” dialog box, select the Hardware tab.
Click on Driver Signing button.
Make sure "block" option is not checked. If it is it will not let you install any uncertified drivers.
--

The installer uses a standard Windows tool to install the driver. However, you can try a manual install too by going to:

C:\Campbellsci\Lib\DevConfigLib\en\v2\nl240

Right click on the NL240.inf file and click install or you can try to use this when prompted when the hardware is first found (XP should allow you to browse to the file).

Hi,

Thanks a lot, it is working!

The block option was not checked in the hardware tab but installing the driver selecting the right directory that contained the NL240.inf file, it finally worked.

Thanks for your help,

Regards,

Coralie
