WINDSONIC4
WINDSONIC4
Orderable2-D Sonic Wind Sensor with SDI-12 Output
Overview
The WindSonic4 is a two-dimensional ultrasonic anemometer for measuring wind direction and speed. It provides an alternative to traditional mechanical cup and vane or propeller and vane anemometers. This sonic wind sensor outputs an SDI-12 signal that can be read a a compatible Campbell Scientific data logger.
The WindSonic4 is not recommended for conditions where rime, ice, or horizontal snow will occur. This sensor is not heated. Please contact Campbell Scientific for information on a heated 2-D sonic anemometer that will work in these conditions.
Note: The mounting equipment supplied with this sensor may vary depending on which Campbell Scientific regional office the sensor is ordered from.
Key Advantages
Minimizes routine maintenance costs
Technical Description
The WindSonic4 uses two pairs of orthogonally oriented transducers to sense the horizontal wind. The transducers bounce the ultrasonic signal from a hood, thus minimizing the effects of transducer shadowing and flow distortion.
Unlike mechanical anemometers, the WindSonic4 has no moving parts to be periodically replaced—minimizing routine maintenance costs.
Benefits
- Low maintenance—no moving parts significantly reduces maintenance cost and time
- Provides a minimum detectable wind speed of 0.01 meters per second
- Compatible with most Campbell Scientific data loggers

Common Accessories
(3)WINDSONIC4CBL
SDI-12 Signal/Power Cable for WindSonic4
The WINDSONIC4CBL connects the WindSonic4 to the data logger. It consists of a 22 AWG cable with a pinned military-style connector, and a UV-resistant Santoprene jacket.
Orderable39117
DIN Rail Terminal Kit with 2 Terminals and 4 Wires
The 39117 provides the needed DIN rail terminals, separator, and wires to connect any product to a data logger or other peripheral that requires four wires for connection. This kit provides the following wires: black, green, red, and clear. The color-coding of these wires matches the wire coloring of the product for ease in connection, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
Orderable39642
SDI-12 DIN Rail Terminal Bus Kit without Mounting Bracket
The 39642 makes it easier for you to connect wires from multiple SDI-12 sensors into one set of terminals on a data logger. The 39642 uses six DIN-rail mountable (pn 27479), 6-wire terminal blocks. The 39642 is a jumper that electrically connects two terminal blocks together at a time (pn 32918). This setup allows up to 11 SDI-12 sensors to be connected to one set of terminals on a data logger.

(2)34344
MetSens or WINDSONIC Stand Mount
The 34344 is a mounting kit that can be installed on a vertical pipe or mast, or on a horizontal crossarm less than 6.35 cm (2.5 in.) in diameter. The kit includes a mounting stand and three pan truss screws, which are used to attach the following: the sensor; two 5/16 x 3.0 in. carriage screws; and two sets of wing nuts, washers, and lock washers.
Orderable33815
SDI-12 Terminal Bus Kit
The 33815 makes it easier for you to connect wires from multiple SDI-12 sensors into one set of terminals on a data logger. The 33815 uses six DIN-rail mountable (pn 27479) 6-wire terminal blocks. The 33815 jumpers two connectors together at a time (pn 32918). This setup allows up to 11 SDI-12 sensors to be connected to one set of terminals on a data logger.

Mounting
The WindSonic4 is shipped with the 17387 mounting kit. This mounting kit is used to attach the sensor to a CM202, CM204, or CM206 crossarm. The crossarm is then mounted to a tripod or tower.
Data Logger Considerations
The WindSonic4 is connected to one control port, +12 Vdc, and ground. Up to ten WindSonic4s (each with a unique address) can be connected to one data logger control port.
Programming
The SDI12 instruction is used to collect data from the WindSonic4.
